A wrought-iron pergola, tables for a dozen, a barbecue station with water and power, and the bay below. It is where the day ends here — after the beach, after the heat, when the light goes gold over the water and nobody is in a hurry to go inside.

I have been opening this gate to guests for more than forty years: families from Scandinavia and the Netherlands, from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, from Italy, and from all over Central and Eastern Europe. I still come down to meet every one of you.

She will hand you the key, show you where to park, and tell you where the fish is good and which beach stays quiet in August. Her son Alex now runs the house with her. It is not a reception desk, and it is not meant to be.

Ten minutes to the water
Kotorska runs up from the old part of Crikvenica. The walk down to the beach takes ten minutes, the market rather less. You can leave the car at the house for the whole week.

Down Kotorska as far as the supermarket, across its car park to the river and over the footbridge. Then the far bank downstream, across the road at the bottom, and back over the river where the beach begins.
980 m from the gate to the water, and a little over twenty metres of climb on the way back — gentle, and spread over the whole distance.
